What is a tic attack?

Tic attacks are sudden, rapid, and repetitive involuntary movements or vocalizations that occur in people with tic disorders. Tic disorders happen due to a disturbance in the basal ganglia of the brain, which is responsible for the control of movement, behavior, and cognition. Tic attacks can affect any part of the body, including the eyes, face, arms, shoulders, torso, and legs. They can also involve complex movements such as jumping, spinning, or twirling. Some people with tic attacks may also experience vocal tics, such as throat clearing, grunting, or yelling. Tic attacks can be triggered by stress, anxiety, fatigue, or excitement, and they can be worsened by fatigue or illness. Treatment for tic attacks involves medications, behavioral therapies, and lifestyle changes.
